Prescription & Over-the-Counter Medicines

It was once common practice to flush expired or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medicines down the toilet.  Your doctor/pharmacist or medicine container instructions may have directed you to do this.  However, it is now known that these substances are bad for our soil, water, and air around us.  In addition to protecting the environment, removing expired or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medicines from your home can prevent overdoses and errors and will keep them away from children.

La Cañada Flintridge residents have several options for properly disposing of expired or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medicines:
  1. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department—Crescenta Valley Station
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Departments of Public Health and Public Works, provide the “Safe Drug Drop-Off” Program at this and some other Sheriff Department locations. The program provides an opportunity for residents to safely and anonymously surrender any unused or expired prescriptions, over the counter medications, “sharps” (needles, syringes and lancets), or any other controlled substances.  Sharps must be in a sharps container.  No questions are asked; the County just wants to get these materials secured and disposed of properly.
